BiCoastal Organics came to Modmacro in need of a logo for their new company. They are a research, consulting, and education company focused on advancing organic food production and consumption, and needed an icon that would speak to the organic food industry, and to the fact that they operate from locations on both coasts of the United States and serve organizations in both places. The final logo, which has since gone on to win several prestigious international design awards, is a creative blend of the two ideas the company wanted to portray, and should serve them well as their business grows.

We wanted to create a digital publication with compelling content and insightful interviews for engaged small business owners and entrepreneurs. The vast majority of businesses in the U.S. are very small. In fact most have zero non-owner employees. We aimed to create a publication that would provide resources specifically for small businesses whether still in startup mode or if they’ve had years of success.

Businessing Magazine is a feature-rich platform with options to search all articles, browse content by topic, and see what’s trending right now. The site is setup for continuous article publishing and a weekly digest that’s sent to thousands of subscribers. Businessing also provides a great user experience on just about any device. There’s no need for a dedicated reader or mobile app. With audio interviews, featured articles, columns and more, Businessing Magazine is one of our proudest accomplishments.

CBR Bearing

CBR Bearing, Inc. is a Fallbrook, Ca company that specializes in providing ceramic hybrid ball bearings for industrial electric motor repair and other performance applications. Through their proprietary build process, CBR has been providing top quality ceramic hybrid and steel ball bearings to customers around the world for over 20 years.

CBR’s existing website was over 10 years old and did not serve to promote their brand and product to their target audience, the industrial electric motor repair industry. The site was outdated aesthetically and did not allow customers to interact with the company on the latest mobile devices.

The new CBR Bearing website features a clean, modern layout with an industrial feel that speaks directly the company’s target market. The site delivers a concise message to their worldwide customers, while seamlessly conveying the detailed ceramic hybrid ball bearing build process and the factors that differentiate CBR from its competitors. The site is also fully mobile responsive, allowing customers on modern mobile devices to learn about CBR Bearing, Inc. and the company’s top quality products.

CBR Bearing specializes in the manufacture of ceramic hybrid ball bearings for the industrial electric motor repair industry. Their superior craftsmanship, reasonable pricing, and industry-leading lead times position CBR to become a dominant force in the niche marketplace that’s currently filled with low-quality, overseas-produced product.

CBR operates in a niche space with a B2B target audience, about half of whom are skilled tradesman from a previous generation. Those decision-makers use the internet and consume digital media much less than the average business person. Therefore, reaching that segment of the audience through digital marketing and social media marketing has limited success. A direct, highly targeted marketing strategy was needed to reach that target segment.

Although our preferred marketing tactics are mostly digital, there is still a place for print marketing. From an ROI perspective, CBR is a perfect example of the value in selecting the smartest marketing strategies, regardless of preference.

We developed a multi-piece print marketing package that includes branded folders, postcards, bi-fold brochures, magnets and stamps. The pieces work together to create a package that closely matches the visual branding and messaging that we established with their award-winning website.

Within just a few days of the first mailing, multiple leads came in! And as expected, customers were impressed with both the pricing and lead times. The print package opened the door for CBR to have an eye-opening conversation with interested companies, allowing customers to learn that products of this quality and specialty are available from a boutique US manufacturer.

Star B Bison Ranch and Hops Farm (San Diego)

Since starting in 1980, Star B has become one of the most recognized Buffalo ranches in the nation, and a true leader in American Bison ranching. In 2008, the 1200 acre ranch expanded into hop farming to supply the growing Southern California craft brewing market with locally grown hops. Star B Hop Farm is now the largest commercial hop farm in San Diego County and is continually expanding to accommodate a growing demand for “San Diego Grown” hops.

Star B reached out to Modmacro in need of a brand refresh. While that process began with designing a new logo, it became immediately clear that brand updates needed to show due respect to the decades of history that the company enjoys as a result of the hard work by the previous generation of owners. We felt strongly that respecting and retaining that heritage was important as we worked to re-brand the ranch to better address the two distinct facets of the organization—namely, bison ranching and hop farming, and the completely separate markets that consume these products.

The name Star B takes center stage and brings equal time to both facets of the company: ranching and farming. We drove towards a sense of history and tradition by using a typeface with a custom twist on the classic western-style fonts of 1800s wanted posters. Bringing in a new feel, we opted for an organic, contemporary green hue that works well with both the craft brew and livestock components of the business. A new Star B icon was created combining a bison’s head, which also forms a capital ‘B’, all encapsulated within a hop shape.

VitalChurch Ministry

VitalChurch Ministry is an organization dedicated to helping Christian churches who find themselves in a time of transition or crisis. They offer diagnostic analysis to get to the real root of a church’s problems, bring in interim pastors to guide leaderless churches, and do follow-up coaching. Their staff of pastors includes some of the leading experts in church diagnostics and intentional interim pastoring in the nation.

VitalChurch Ministry initially came to Modmacro for a new website. Some of their services had changed since their last website was designed and it no longer accurately reflected what they had to offer. At the beginning of the process, their organization was called reTURN, but they soon came to realize that the time had come for a complete reboot of their branding and identity, and it would be best to do so before having a new website designed. They engaged the team at Modmacro to help come up with a new company name, as well as a logo, and an accompanying brand and style guide. In the process, they also wanted to revisit their existing mission and vision statements and corporate messaging.

The first step in the rebranding process was to come up with a new name for the ministry. We worked in partnership with the organization’s leadership and conducted our own research and ultimately landed on “VitalChurch Ministry”. After the new name had been agreed upon, it was time to design a new logo and come up with a color palette. Our design team presented multiple logo options. The final version contains bold typography with a circular element that reflects the organization’s dedication to complete restoration of churches.

To address corporate messaging and mission and vision statements, Modmacro conducted a focus group with individuals that make up the organization’s target audience (pastors, church elders, church staff members, and volunteer leaders) to test wording variations and solicit feedback. We brought the results back to VitalChurch leadership, which helped guide them toward their new messaging that more accurately reflects who they are and what they do.

The final deliverable in the rebranding process was a 17-page Culture and Brand Guide, which outlines the proper usage of the new logo and color palette, and contains corporate messaging to guide future marketing communications efforts and help maintain a cohesive brand for VitalChurch Ministry.

Concord Termite Control

Concord Termite has served Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano Counties for over 30 years with thorough termite inspection reports and safe, effective termite and wood destroying organism treatments.

Concord’s existing website, while offering customers several useful features, was over a decade old and did not accurately reflect the company’s professionalism and brand equity in the market. Nor did it effectively serve their tech-savvy, Bay Area customers browsing on mobile devices.

We delivered a bright and contemporary, custom-designed website that’s fully mobile-responsive. With an upgrade to the most useful UX features of the old site, the new Concord website offers a more enriching customer experience, while providing an informative overview of their services, for both real estate agents and homeowners alike. The website now provides customers with a digital channel to connect with Concord Termite from any device.

Krystle Giordano

A real estate company, Krystle Giordano serves Murrieta and the surrounding areas as an agent for both residential and commercial properties.

The Giordanos wanted a contemporary mark with subtly embedded elements related to their professional histories with the Fire Department and the San Diego Chargers.

This bright energetic identity pulls color from the Fire Dept. and Chargers. Combined with clean contemporary typography this mark is “in-the-know” about the current marketplace. In the flame icon we’ve hidden a capital “T” and a capital “K”, for Tony and Krystle.

Knockout Pest Control and Termite

Serving Southwest Riverside, North County and San Diego, Knockout is a trusted pest control solution. With services ranging from termite inspections for escrow, to complete pest, termite and animal control, the company offers a wide range of solutions for local customers. But one of their biggest differentiators is the wood repair services they provide that most pest control companies can’t.

Knockout was looking for a new site to help raise their profile and work as a platform for local SEO and internet marketing campaigns. They also needed a brand refresh and a site that was more inviting and made it easy for customers to get started.

The new site is fully mobile responsive, allowing users to easily view the site from virtually any device. The design is professional and clean but makes use of the company’s bright colors and energetic branding.

Built to support local SEO efforts, the new site makes it easy for customers to learn about the company’s services and contact them for a free inspection. Users can also learn about common Southern California pests in the pest identification library.

BM Windows Rebrand

BM Windows is a well-respected replacement window and door installation company in San Diego. They provide free in-home consultations, assist with product selection and perform the installation.

It was time for BM Windows to rethink their signage and several branded business documents. Over the years the layouts and logo had changed incrementally and each piece had a slightly different look. The company needed an updated logo and consistent branding across all public-facing materials.

We revisited each business document, from proposals and measurement forms to contracts and financial agreements, to create a streamlined, cohesive look. We created a new logo that’s fresh and contemporary and applied it everywhere in digital and in print.
